Amiin Madar

Amiin Madar is a Swedish-Somali filmmaker based in Stockholm. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Art from Konstfack University of Arts, Crafts and Design and previously studied documentary filmmaking at Öland Folk High School. Since 2019, he has been working as a film director at the production company Story AB.

Amiin made his directorial debut with the short documentary Miski & Bianca, which premiered on SVT Play. The film follows two female martial artists and explores themes related to women’s experiences and struggles in society.

He is currently working on his first feature-length documentary Theatre Is the New Hip-Hop, (Teater är den nya hiphopen which will premiere in cinemas in May 2025 and be broadcast on SVT’s K Special. The film tells the story of Sharmarke Elmi’s journey from the suburbs to the theatre stage — a powerful narrative about a young man challenging himself and his surroundings in a world where hip-hop has long been the dominant form of expression.

Amiin is also developing a short film titled Retoriken (The Rhetoric), a collaboration with SVT focusing on young people competing in debate tournaments. The film is scheduled to premiere on SVT Play in the fall of 2026.
